Which metric should I used to forecast equipment trends? Readiness or Mean Time Between Failure?

Mean Time Between Failure Simulation

Readiness is a poor measure of vehicle or fleet performance, yet it is used extensively in the military and commercial sectors for that purpose. Mean time between failure (MTBF) is a better metric, but most maintenance management systems are not set up to provide the data elements and data quality control to measure mean time between failure for their systems. These systems require a system that estimates MTBF given their readiness and repair cycle time metrics.

Enholm Heuristics uses an organization’s Fleet Readiness numbers along with repair cycle times in a simulation that estimates the MTBF for equipment. This estimated MTBF can then be used to track failure trends in equipment when readiness numbers don’t provide usable information.
